Saturday’s Trip and a Lesson Learned

February 24, 2008

Yesterday, Marjie, Karen and I took a road trip.   Believe it or not our motivating spot was Meers Store in Meers, Oklahoma.   I had told them how great the burgers were at Meers and then not long after that The Food Channel had Bon Appetite’s Top 3.   And guess what spot had the number 3 top burger in the nation????   You got it, Meers!   So we decided we’d head to Meers stop and eat and then head on down to Wichita Falls to visit a yarn shop located there.   We got to Meers a bit early but since it’s open for breakfast that was no problem.   In fact, I was shocked to see several tables of customers who were either waiting for their meals or who were finishing their burgers.   I’ve been there before and knew the giant burger that fills the bottom of a pie plate was more than enough for one person.   So we all ordered regular sized individual burgers.   That was a mistake.   You don’t get enough meat on the regular burger to get that great taste of hormone-free, no antibiotic fresh ground beef.   But, I don’t want to lead you to think the burgers were not good, they were.   You get more meat when you order the larger burger.   I also feel compelled to tell you….ONE of us eats SISSY burgers.   But I’m not telling who.  😉

I wish I would have taken my camera.  If you’ve never seen the restaurant at Meers you wouldn’t believe it.   The building is like 115 years old and has been added onto over the years.   The heat seemed to be non existent so if you go in the winter dress warmly.    The restaurant also houses a seismograph that detects earthquakes!    Click here and you can read more about it.   It’s pretty interesting.

We left Meers and with the help of Rico Suave (aka Marjie’s GPS system)  made our way back to the highway to head further south into the great state of Texas.   Now I have to back up a bit here and tell you a little voice in my head told me to call this shop last week.   I thought I would make sure of the hours etc. so we’d have plenty of time to browse and shop.   But I did not follow through.   And yep, you guessed it, that is how we learned our lesson.   We drove all that way only to drive up and see a handwritten sign on the door “closed until further notice”.   Damn.    So that was our lesson for the day……always call ahead.

Today is the clappy party.   I plan on going.   Hope to see you there!

I fell down…..

February 20, 2008

I made a half-hearted promise to myself that I wasn’t going to buy anymore yarn for “awhile”.   I guess I could let myself off easily since I didn’t give a time frame???   lol  Yeah, right.   lol  I stopped by L & B the other day to check out the new Miss Babs sock yarn.   Yummy!!   It has some wonderful squish to it.   So naturally I had to get some.    I got this colorway:

img_1103.jpg

It reminds me of fall but it is a break from my usual blues that I seem to be hooked on now.

Then there was this other sock yarn that jumped in my hands:

img_1105.jpg

I have to confess it is a disappointing “squeeze” compared to Miss Babs.  This is the Plymouth sock yarn.

Then I saw the new Mission Falls Whirl!   I LOVE this colorway.   I bought a token skein until I can decide what I want to do with it.   You just can’t go wrong buying Mission Falls.

img_1109.jpg

Sorry for the blurry picture.

Later on we stopped by for Happy Cat’s opening/going out of business sale.   I scooped up a couple of different yarns.

I got this sock yarn:

img_1106.jpg

I saw a sample sock knitted out of this and I really liked the colorway.

Then I picked up this:

img_1112.jpg

I got two skeins of this red and two skeins of white.   I thought it would be great for some washcloths.

Now this is what motivated me to go in the first place:

img_1099.jpg

I loved this bag the first time I saw a picture of it on net.   I lucked out and got in the room this was in and snatched it up.   There were only a few and I wanted this.   Isn’t it gorgeous??

I had some help with the picture taking tonight.   Meet the Inspector:

Valentine’s Day candies and memories

February 14, 2008

chalks.jpg

I’m sure many of you have already heard this story but there may be a few who have not.   Once my sister and I left the nest, my daddy always brought us a Valentine in person.   He most often dropped it off at our homes while we were at work but it was there waiting for us when we got home.   He would give us a card and a box of conversation hearts which we called “chalks”.   We called them “chalks” because that is what they tasted like to us and obviously we did not like them.  So one year I told Daddy to put the “-lates” on the “chalks” because we did not eat those little boxes of conversation hearts he’d give us.   Well, he listened and the next V-day I came home to a card, my small box of conversation hearts AND a small box of Russell Stover’s chocolates.  Yay Daddy!!    This is the 8th Valentine’s Day that he’s been gone but I kept many of those boxes of conversation hearts and will treasure them forever.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.

A Super Saturday

February 3, 2008

After yesterday I needed today just to chill and do some chores.

Yesterday was a very special day for my friend Emily. So five of us started our Saturday very early so we could go see Emily become the permanent rector of her church. It was a lovely celebration and in true knitterly fashion (and with Emily’s blessing) we sat on the back row and knitted while we watched. Congratulations Emily!

After a quick lunch we went to the SWAK in the City open house. This is what I bought:

copy-of-img_1089.jpg

Madelaine Tosh sock yarn. I don’t know if it will become socks or a scarf of some sort but it is nice and squishy.

We then ran across town to secure our seats at Gourmet Yarn for Knit-In. We had a great time as always. Lots of knitter friends and plenty of great food. And this is what I got there:

copy-of-img_1084.jpg

I’m for sure going to make the drop stitch scarf with this yarn. Isn’t that yarn gorgeous? Now if I can only find a 3rd skein. lol

As far as actual knitting, I feel like a hamster in a cage. I’m knitting almost every day but I’m getting no where. I started a scarf out of Ultra Alpaca before Christmas. I frogged it twice before I settled on an even striped scarf. Well guess what? I’m not happy with it and it took a dip into the frog pond.

I’ve been working on the Andrea Reversible Lace Scarf by Schaefer Yarn. Problem is it isn’t something I can knit on when I’m with friends or when I can’t give it 100% concentration. So this is how far I’ve gotten on it:

img_1093.jpg

I love those colors. I have a feeling though that it may take me a long time to finish this scarf. lol

I also started this a few days ago:

This is the Araucania Ranco Multy I picked up in Tulsa a few weeks ago. I was hoping it would be a beautiful drop stitch scarf but it just doesn’t have the pizazz it needs to be beautiful. Darn it. lol It seems everything I pick up I lose interest in it.

Cross your fingers for me….maybe my mojo will come back or something will spark and I will have a finished object that I truly love SOON! My clapotis certainly is!

PS:  Katie, we wonder also what “the winner’s” stash looks like….we’ve never seen it!!  We often tease her that while some people have a closet or maybe a whole room dedicated to yarn, she has a garage apartment she could fill.   🙂
