Movies

December 30, 2008

Marjie, Angela and I went to see Doubt this weekend.   First, I liked the movie until the end.   That’s all I’ll say so I won’t spoil it for those of you who want to see it.   But for those of you who have, I’d love to know your final thoughts.

I also wonder if anyone knows about the habits the nuns wore.   I have seen plenty of nuns in my lifetime but I’ve never seen any in a habit like the nuns in this movie wore.   I’m guessing the habit was particular to their Order???

And finally, I loved that tea pot they had in the scene in the principal’s office.   Anyone know the name on the bottom of the tea pot?   lol  I know it is a wild shot but I really liked it.

A New Meme

December 29, 2008

Ok, maybe I’m the only one who thinks these are fun….but here goes?

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Yes, the story my daddy told was that he named me after Kaye Starr, a singer he admired.    But here is what I think is the real truth.   My daddy’s mother died when he was two.   His grandmother and aunt raised he and his siblings because my grandfather was on the road working wherever he could.   The aunt doted on my daddy and he adored her as well.   She was like a mother to him.   Her name was Katherine.   Aunt Katherine did not like my mother and was very jealous of her.  I think Daddy knew this and knew that in turn, my mother didn’t like Aunt Katherine either.   So when it came to naming me he couldn’t get away with naming me after her, so he got close.  My middle name is the same middle name my cousin Ronnie has only mine is spelled the feminine way.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
Today.  Sisters sometimes do stupid stuff.

3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
My handwriting is horrible but once in awhile I do way better than other times.   I prefer to type.
4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
I love good old fashioned bologna.   But I can’t have that very often so I’d have to say turkey or ham.
5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Yes one son, Michael and a feline daughter Lexi.

6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
Yeah, I think so.   I get told alot that I’m very easy to talk to.   I was once told I can get someone to spill their guts within 15 minutes.   I don’t know if I’m THAT easy to talk to or not but I love hearing people’s stories.  🙂
7. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?
Uh, yeah, right.

8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
No.  Had those out when I was 5 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.   Favorite tonsil memory is the Hawaiian boy and girl embroidery kit my folks got me.   It was my first foray into the needlearts.  lol
9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
Hell no.

10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?
Hmmm, well I eat Cheerios most mornings.   I can’t say its my very favorite but its what I eat most.   I do love some good oatmeal and Cream of Wheat made with milk.   Yum.

11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?
No

12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
In some ways yes, others….no.

13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?
Ben and Jerry’s Brownie something or other.   I grab it at the store but I can’t really recall the correct name.   lol   Plus I can’t eat that stuff very often.  That reminds me, have you seen those tiny little cartons that contain maybe a quarter of a cup?   Portion control.

14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
It varies.  I have to admit I notice how a person is dressed.   I also look at their eyes.   I like a person who can look you in the eye when they are talking to you.   I think it says alot.

15.  Pink or Red?  Ok, quit laughing, those of you who know me know my hatred of pink.   I love a good warm red.   I hate the blue reds.   But a good warm red, like Ellen’s Shibuiknits Chinese Red she knitted her Seraphim Shawl….I love it.   I will accept some soft powder pinks and I love a salmon pink…you know the ones that have some warm hints to it.

16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF?
My weight.   Sigh!  Like that is any big secret.   The other thing would be that I’m probably more sensitve than most.   That sensitivity makes me cry at times when I really don’t want to.

17.  WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST?
No question there, my Daddy.  And my mother, although she is still living.   Since she got involved with her new man friend, she isn’t the mother I grew up with.
18. DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO DO THIS?
Well, not everyone but I’d love to see my blog-reading friends to do it.

19. WHAT COLOR SHOES ARE YOU WEARING?
Brown Born sandals.   They are my houseshoes.  Year round.

20. WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?
Broiled chicken breast and Italian green beans.

21. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
The sound of me typing.   It is after midnight and I can’t sleep.
22. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE?
Mmmmm, Seafoam green.   Or Periwinkle.

Merry Christmas!!

Malabrigo Mmmmmmm

December 21, 2008

I saw this scarf on another blog.   The blogger knitted it in Malabrigo worsted weight in a cream color.  It looked so classy.   I knew I had two skeins of this Malabrigo American Beauty in my stash.   It was so fun to go stash diving!   Anyway, I started this last night.   I entertained the notion of having it finished by Christmas day but then reality set in.   I have two more work days, Christmas shopping to complete, a house to clean, brandied cranberries to cook, pies to bake and a ham, so how much time does that leave for knitting??  Not much.   My mother loves red and she is in that stage of her life where she is always cold.   This in and of itself is unreal!   My mother has always been hot natured with a bead of sweat above her lip .   (This is mostly when she’s been running in circles working, cleaning etc.)   Anyway, I bought her some long undies so she can layer under her clothing.   I thought this scarf would keep her warm and if I can find some red gloves that would be perfect!

Back to the knitting, I love this pattern.   It was published in the Fall 2007 issue of Interweave magazine.   I just happened to have it.   Once you get past the ribbing, its a simple 4 line repeat.   You can memorize it in 4 rows, it is that easy.   The scarf is called The Elfin Scarf and it is 42 inches long which the blogger called  a muffler.   What is the difference between a scarf and a muffler?   Is it length?   If anyone knows please tell us in the comment section.

This Malabrigo is truly soft.   No one exaggerated when they said that.  It is easy to split with your needles so that is one drawback but I just pay attention to make sure I don’t.   I love this color.   It isn’t a true blue red and isn’t primary bright.   It has a subtle fade to it that does remind me of a flower.

Just for the record, this is some yarn I bought while on our trip to Colorado and I got it at the Colorful Yarn shop in Littleton.   It is a a small shop in a business office building that is cram packed with all types of gorgeous yarns.   Very well worth a stop if you are in that area.   I don’t recall the exact nature of the Oklahoma connection but the mother of the owner was working the day we were in and there is an Oklahoma connection.   We ran into several shop owners with Oklahoma connections that trip.   lol

Ok, time to get busy and Lexi is pawing at me wanting me to play.   Hope everyone is staying warm!

Support our Troops

December 12, 2008

A friend sent this link to me.   I clicked on it thinking if this is another way to get me on some mailing list, I’m bailing.   What a pleasant surprise it isn’t!   So I’m sharing this link with you.   It’s supported by Xerox and is a way for you to send a card to our troops to show your support and to let someone know you are thinking of them.

Christmas Fun

December 4, 2008

I saw this on another blog today and thought it looked like fun.   Please feel free to copy and do your own post with these same questions.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I love wrapping paper but despise wrapping gifts, so (sigh) I use bags if I can or I love the chinese take out boxes!  I think those are so cute.
2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial, when I put a tree up.   I’ve only put up one tree in 9 years.   I usually don’t have any guests plus we go to Colorado every other year so I’m the only one who would see it so why bother?   lol   Except this year I decided to get a 3 ft table top as the tree I put up several years ago, Lexi decided it was her tree to climb.   Not.   I’ll put this one on top of my armoire where she can’t jump.   I’ve had a couple of real trees several years ago and the mess they leave behind isn’t worth it.

3. When do you put up the tree? Years ago when I got excited about Christmas I’d put it up Thanksgiving night.   I plan on putting one up this year but it is still in the box so far.   Pray for me that I get it up.   lol

4. When do you take the tree down? Right after Christmas.

5. Do you like eggnog? No, I’m a hot chocolate kinda gal.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?  Wow, this is hard, probably some doll I had longed for.   I know I asked for a Barbie car once and got some knockoff that was very disappointing and that reminds me I did ask for a Barbie once and got some knock off…….my folks had a tendancy to do that….find a cheaper replacement, maybe that’s why I don’t recall a favorite gift?   Yikes!!!  Don’t mean to sound unappreciative but I think the more memorable gifts were my camera or clock radio when I was older.

7. Hardest person to buy for? It used to be my dad.   He’s been gone now since September of 1999 and it’s odd how many things I see that he’d love now.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My mother.   We had several similar interests so it was very easy to find something for her.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? No, but years ago when doing ceramics was so popular I did make a set for my mother that will be mine some day.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? I have about 6 boxes of cards from years past.   I do send out some upon occasion but not enough to use up all those cards!!!

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? The worst is nothing at all.   But one year my mother got me the most butt-ugly shirt.   I can’t recall what ‘excuse’ I made up but I took it back and got something else.   lol   My sister and I learned to give her the SKU number/model number or whatever or we’d end up with some ugly stuff.   Even now she will buy those gadget items you see on the back of your credit card bill and she’ll get two, one for me and one for my sister.   I think I gathered that stuff up and gave it to Marjie for her church rummage sale.   Better to get it out of the house quickly than to let it become clutter.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? I can’t say I have a favorite.   I like some of the classics and will watch those over each year.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I started in October this year.  Unusual.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? No.  For the most part, that is the joy I get out of Christmas is trying to find a gift that I hope will make the recipient smile.   I know I don’t always hit the mark but I try.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Fudge?   Mexican Wedding Cookies?  Homemade Peanut Brittle?  I guess most of the usual homemade Christmas goodies.

16. Lights on the tree? Of course! I am in the clear mode for now.

17. Favorite Christmas song? Coventry Carole is one.   White Christmas, Silver Bells, Little Drummer Boy.   Wow, those get me into the mood.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? So far, we have it at my mother’s one year and at my sister’s in Colorado the next and alternate.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Rudolph, Donner, Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Sleepy, Dopey, Grumpy…uhhhhhhhhhh    😉  Guess that’s a no.

20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning without fail.   When we were older kids we’d beg so much that my folks would let us open one gift on Christmas Eve although they had veto rights.   One year my folks went to a friend’s house on Christmas Eve and my sister and I stayed home and opened (carefully and rewrapped) every gift we had.   My mother realized it when she got home and was furious with us.   I do have to admit that was a learning lesson.   The next morning Christmas was a real let down.  Lesson learned.  We never did it again.

21. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? That dream I had for years and years about sitting in the dark with my sweetheart gazing at the Christmas tree lights, it’s never happened.

22. Favorite ornament theme or color? I had all Father Christmas’s several years ago and then segued into Snowmen.   I quit putting up a tree and decorations around then so I still have that stuff but it is packed away somewhere.   lol   I did buy some smaller ornaments the other day.   I love those glass ornaments and bought some gingerbread men, snowmen and santas.   While I appreciate the beauty of a color themed tree, it seems so sterile.   I like figurines.
23. What do you want for Christmas this year? I know what I want but that isn’t going to happen.

24. Angel on the tree top or a star? This year, if I get the tree up, it will be a glass ornament.

25. Favorite Christmas dinner? We do the same dinner for Christmas that we do for Thanksgiving, turkey, dressing and pumpkin pies.   Yum.
